BVS Data
Collection
Options
The primary data
collection tool
used in the
Beef
Verification
Solution Program
is AgInfoLink’s
BeefLink
Software. At
the ranch level,
using a RFID
reader coupled
with a laptop
computer, tags
can be scanned
and data entered
directly into
the software.
Data collection
can also be
achieved with
barcode labels
attached to
CattleCardsTM,
or “AgMobile,”
the combination
of a Bluetooth
enabled PDA
(Personal Data
Assistant) and a
Bluetooth RFID
reader. Both of
these data
collection
methods though,
must ultimately
be downloaded or
entered into a
computer
equipped with
BeefLink.
A CattleCardTM
enrollment is
aimed at small
to moderate
sized cow/calf
operations that
not only wish to
meet the demands
of NAIS and/or
AGIL PVP
compliance but
also desire the
opportunity to
link production
and carcass
merit
information back
to the dam and
sire groups used
to produce the
animal. For
these forward
thinking
producers, this
enrollment
provides a low
cost alternative
for collecting
and managing the
data necessary
to compare the
genetics within
their herd.
Producers simply
need to contact
their local
Verification
Center who
places the tag
order through
the BVS Shopping
Cart. The
CattleCardTM/RFID
Tag Sets are
then sent
directly to the
member who puts
them in the left
ear of the
animal, places
the
corresponding
barcode label on
the CattleCardTM,
writes down the
data they wish
to collect and
returns the card
to their
Verification
Center. The
Verification
Center scans the
Animal
Identification
Numbers (AIN’s)
into BeefLink
and records any
data collected
on the cards.
Once the animal
data is
collected in the
BeefLink
Software, the
Verification
Center runs a
limited number
of Excel or
Access-based
reports and
sends or emails
them to the
producer for
their review,
information and
analysis.
Web Reporting:
A related CattleCardTM
enrollment
allows the
member to review
data in the BVS-PDSN via a
secure, on-line,
web portal.
There, they can
check for
accuracy, run a
limited number
of reports,
record
additional data
and export
individual
animal data into
Excel
spreadsheets.
